Quick Facts

The campaign

Medical Marijuana 2020 is a campaign to make medical marijuana available to Mississippians who have debilitating medical conditions. To do that we are spending the next year gathering more than 86,000 signatures on petitions to qualify a constitutional amendment for the 2020 Mississippi general election ballot. Once the signatures are verified by local officials and the Secretary of State, the proposed amendment will appear on the November 2020 ballot. That amendment, if approved by Mississippi voters, would allow physicians to certify medical marijuana for patients with debilitating medical conditions and then allow those patients to obtain medical marijuana in a legal and safe manner from treatment centers licensed and regulated by the Mississippi Department of Health.

Physician's Certification

Medical marijuana is a safe and effective option for physicians to certify for patients who suffer from certain debilitating medical conditions. Physicians will have the option to certify the use of medical marijuana as part of treatment after examining the patient. With a licensed physician’s certification, a patient would obtain an identification card from the Mississippi Department of Health and medical marijuana from a regulated treatment center, which will be the only place medical marijuana will be available.

Relief for patients

If approved by Mississippi voters, patients who have debilitating medical conditions will gain access to medical marijuana in Mississippi through physicians certifying it as a treatment option. It would simply serve as an additional tool for physicians to help people who are in pain or who have chronic diseases, for whom medical marijuana would help make it through the day.

Strict + Safe Regulation

The Mississippi Department of Health will regulate the process by which medical marijuana is grown, processed, and made available to patients. Limits will be placed on the amount of medical marijuana a patient may obtain over a specified period of time.

who qualifies

Mississippians who have the following debilitating medical conditions would qualify for medical marijuana: cancer, epilepsy and other seizures, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, HIV, AIDS, chronic pain, ALS, glaucoma, Crohn’s disease, sickle-cell anemia, autism with aggressive or self-injurious behavior, spinal cord injuries, and similar diseases.

2.8 million americans receiving relief

A total of 33 states, including Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida, and Oklahoma have approved the use of medical marijuana. Throughout the country, more than 2.8 million Americans are using medical marijuana to relieve pain and treat other symptoms of debilitating medical conditions. These states have created safe and effective ways to distribute and regulate medical marijuana.

Safe Alternative to Opioids

States that have authorized the use of medical marijuana have shown a 25% reduction in opioid-related deaths. Medical marijuana is a much safer alternative to opioids and can treat pain unresponsive to other forms of medication.

Relief for Veterans

Veterans now account for 20% of all suicides in the United States. 18-22 veterans commit suicide every day, many of them suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Medical marijuana is a safe and effective treatment to assist veterans in managing the debilitating symptoms and effects of PTSD.

mississippians for compassionate care

Medical Marijuana 2020 is funded and operated by Mississippians for Compassionate Care, a group of people in Mississippi who care deeply about helping those who suffer from chronic and debilitating medical conditions by providing physicians with the option to certify the use of medical marijuana to patients. The campaign is backed by a steering committee of medical and health care professionals, law enforcement representatives, leaders in the faith community, and veterans.
